Q&A: Really bad diarrhea after surgery?

Question by KK: Really bad diarrhea after surgery?
It’s been two days since I had a kidney stone zapped (they actually removed it using “sound waves”…don’t ask…) and they (the doctors/nurses) told me it would be normal to have bloody urine and to be passing small painless granules for a couple of days as a result of the blasted kidney stone. In addition to this, I have had massive diarrhea since the surgery, and the doctors didnt say anything about this. During the surgery, I was put into a “twilight sleep” using anestisia. Could my diarrhea be a result of my body not agreeing with the anestisia?

I wouldn’t think so. Check with your doctor. Drink plenty of liquids and stay out of the heat. You could dehydrate very easily in this hot weather.

it might be, anesthesia makes my whole gastro intestinal system screwed up for a few days, stay off dairy to help it, call your dr. and see if you can take immodium, that always helps me………….tea and dry toast will help it too good luck

Having runny stools is normal……drink lots of water and it should get better with in 24 hours. Your body is in shock right now from the all of sudden change in your organs being shut down while you were knocked out. Dont worry, it will get better.

Not very likely. As a part of anesthesia we typically use opiods like morphine or fentanyl, and these drugs have constipation as their side effect. Lomotil, a drug used to treat diarrhea, is an opiod.

Of all the things that could be causing this, if I had to bet on it, I would bet on antibiotics. Did your doctors put you on an antibiotic after your ESWL? Antibiotics can kill off the good bacteria in your gut and cause diarrhea.

It would make sense that it would be because of the anesthesia. I have heard of people getting it after they went to the dentist and had Novocaine. If it continues for like 5 days, I would call the doctor to make sure you don’t have some kind of an infection.

It might be that, or it might be the antibiotics I assume they have you on as well?!

Your body obviously doesn’t handle mineral salts at all well. A condition you share with my daughter (who has had two procedures like yours already, and will soon need another). Regardless of that you need to keep your electrolytes in balance. It has been recommended to her, and you should use this as well, that she drink one gatorade a day when she has uncontrollable diarrhea.

    For two reasons…

    1) It keeps your electrolytes in balance, and
    2) It actually helps firm up the bowels.

When she first told me this I didn’t believe her, but I was desperate so I tried it. It works. Every time. It’s a painless way of getting your bowels to behave, without chemicals.
