What causes them?

While I have never passed a stone myself, I’ve been told it’s as painful as giving birth, which is something I HAVE done. You already had a pretty good idea of what your pain level will be. There are different types of stones — renal calculi — and if you click on the link below, you will find the answers to your other questions.

I passed two, one eight years ago and, one recently. I have been shot, twice, I have had back surgery twelve times, and, my hand was crushed by a dozer blade. I have never had a feeling like passing a stone. You can’t breathe, you can’t move, it seems to freeze everything.
When I left the ER this time the nurse in charge looked at me and stated “now you know what it’s like for a women to have a baby”
It is exceedingly painful. I passed one many years ago and fainted.
